August 2025

Dear Airport Community,

I am thrilled to join the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Community Relations division as its new director. I look forward to drawing on my more than 10+ years of experience in the transportation sector to enhance how we serve our neighboring communities. I am eager to continue building partnerships as our region prepares to be on the national and international stage. This month, we are excited to re-launch our community relations newsletter,  Community Connection, to keep you informed about our activities, programs, and the latest community news. I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you, and I look forward to connecting with those I have not yet met at one of our upcoming events.

Our team values your feedback and would love to hear from you. Please reach out to us at communityrelations@lawa.org.

ATMP Roadway Improvements Project
Aerial view of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project (ATMP) Roadway Improvements

This month, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) began preliminary construction on the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project (ATMP) Roadway Improvements which includes 4.4 miles of dedicated airport roadways for traffic headed into LAX's Central Terminal Area (CTA). The ATMP Roadway Improvements Project will reduce airport-related congestion and traffic back-ups on surrounding public streets.

When complete, the project will remove more than 500 cars from Sepulveda Boulevard at any given time, moving airport traffic to dedicated airport roadways. Improvements will also be made to intersections, traffic signals and protected pedestrian bridges, making it easier to navigate. Travel time in and out of LAX will remain roughly the same.

The roadways into LAX are expected to be completed in spring 2028, there will be a pause in construction for the Olympics. The entire project is expected to be completed mid-year in 2030.

Cal Poly Pomona Summer Camp Tour

A group of 48 high school students and their chaperones from a summer camp hosted by Cal Poly Pomona's College of Engineering visited LAX on Wednesday, August 6. The group participated in presentations from our Business, Jobs & Social Responsibility Division on the various careers at airports and the work our partners at HNTB do at LAX. The tour began at the Flight Path Museum & Learning Center and ventured onto the LAX airfield where the group was treated to a behind the scenes look at some of the finishing touches being done to the Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC) project courtesy of LAWA's Chief of Airport Planning, David Kim. This project will include space for eight gates for narrowbody aircraft and is anticipated to open later this year.

Around Town

This month, the LAWA Community Relations team actively engaged with the community through a variety of events.

That evening, the team also hosted a booth at the Movie in the Park event in El Segundo, connecting with the community through activities like Plinko and handing out giveaways.

  • On August 5, the Community Relations team was out in full force for National Night Out, partnering with Southwest Airlines, LAX PUPs (Pets Unstressing Passengers), LAX Police, the FBI, and the TSA to share important messages. We also supported events at the LAPD Pacific Division in Mar Vista and the LAPD West Valley Division in Reseda.
