MAY 2026

Dear LAWA Community,

The flowers are blooming — and so is the airport. In this month’s issue of The Community Connection, you’ll get a look at the energy and activity happening both on and off the airfield. From progress on SkyLink and other LAX modernization projects to airport tours and community events, the team has been hard at work. Their efforts come at the perfect time as Los Angeles World Airports prepares to welcome the FIFA World Cup next month.

We also hope all the mothers in our community enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Josh Francis Director of Community Relations Los Angeles World Airports

Sincerely,

Josh Francis

Director of Community Relations

On Sunday, May 3, members of LAWA’s Community Relations team participated in the Culver City Education Foundation’s “A Taste of Culver City” event at Amazon MGM Studios. The culinary fundraiser highlighted Culver City’s restaurant community and included entertainment, student performances, a silent auction, and other activities to support the Culver City Unified School District. LAWA served as the event’s activities sponsor, shared information about the SkyLink train project, and distributed giveaway items to attendees. This event sells out every year.

Tours and More Tours
Students from the North Valley Occupational Center explore careers in maintenance at Thornton Aviation during their tour. Other stops included Standard Aero and LAFD.

April and May brought a full lineup of tours, and word is definitely getting out about LAWA’s Behind‑the‑Scenes experiences. Visitors love exploring airport history, uncovering hidden airfield secrets, and learning about the wide range of careers waiting for those ready to take off. If you are treated to a tour, you may even get lucky and visit one of our popular airlines along the way.

In addition to those pictured, in mid-April the Children's Community School in Van Nuys toured VNY Airport. At LAX, nearly three dozen members of Cal State Fullerton's life long learning group enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour as well as staff from the IT department of Sofi Stadium had a specialized tour sharing technology tips. The start of May continues the trend starting with the American Association of Airport Executives, the LAX/Kiawanis Club to name a few tours not pictued.

Did you know?

Did you know that Los Angeles International Airport has an official song? “LA International Airport,” written by Leanne Scott, was first recorded by David Frizzell in 1970 and became a major hit when Susan Raye released her version a year later. The song climbed to No. 9 on the U.S. country chart, crossed over to pop, and found international success in Japan and Australia.

Raye returned to LAX on August 6, 2003, during the airport’s 75th anniversary, performing the song for an enthusiastic crowd as the City of Los Angeles proclaimed it the official song of LAX. Memorabilia from the 1971 hit is on display at the Flight Path Learning Center, and a video of her 2003 performance is sealed in an airport time capsule to be opened in 2028. A new version with updated lyrics, recorded by Nashville artist Shirley Myers, served as the soundtrack for LAX’s anniversary music video.

LAX Residential Sound Insulation Program

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) relaunched the LAX Residential Sound Insulation (RSI) Program for eligible homeowners located within FAA-approved noise contours near LAX.

The program provides sound-insulation improvements, including upgraded windows, exterior doors, and ventilation systems, at no cost to homeowners in the City of El Segundo and select neighborhoods within Los Angeles City Council Districts 11 and 8. Improvements vary depending on each home’s construction type and any applicable historic designation requirements.

Although the program is winding down, there is still time to apply. Applications will be accepted through Spring 2027.

Homeowners are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. An updated noise exposure map is expected to be released in March/April 2026, and properties that fall outside the revised FAA-approved noise contours may no longer qualify. Submitting an application now helps ensure your eligibility before the contour update takes effect.

To learn more about the program, confirm eligibility, or submit an application online, please visit: www.LAWA.org/laxRSIprogram. For questions or additional information, please contact: Evelin Barajas, LAX RSI Program Homeowner Liaison, at 424-646-7444 or laxrsi@lawa.org.
