Dear LAWA Community,
Summer is officially here, and LAWA is celebrating in a big way. With FIFA soccer games bringing global excitement to Los Angeles, our terminals have been filled with energy, color and community spirit. Travelers earlier this month were treated to our FIFA pep rally — sunglasses, stickers, scarves and plenty of smiles included.
This week, we also recognize Juneteenth on Friday, June 19. Commemorating the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans, this day is a meaningful opportunity to reflect on freedom, resilience and the ongoing work toward equality.
June is also Pride Month, and we're thrilled to participate in the San Fernando Valley Pride celebration at the Van Nuys Civic Center on Saturday, June 27. Love is love, and we're proud to stand with and celebrate our LGBTQ+ community.
And to all the fathers and father figures who support, guide and inspire — we wish you a very happy Father's Day.
Sincerely,
Josh Francis
Director of Community Relations

LAWA supported the 59th All Airport Golf Tournament, presented by Jacobs, held at Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry on Friday, June 5th. This annual tradition benefits the Bob Hope USO at LAX and the LAX Kiwanis Club. The day began bright and early as 340 golfers from the LAX airport community took to the greens, and concluded with a banquet and a check presentation ceremony for the USO and Kiwanis Club.
Several LAWA executives participated, including Airport Commissioner Nicholas Roxborough, Chief Development Officer Mike Christensen, Chief Operations and Maintenance Officer Doug Webster, Chief Revenue and Experience Officer Courtney Moore, Deputy Executive Director of Public Safety & Security Martin Elam, LAWA General Counsel Brian Ostler, and Van Nuys Airport Manager Jacob Haik.
LAWA Airport Commissioner Courtney La Bau served as keynote speaker and helped draw names for the 50/50 raffle and grand prize drawings. The tournament raised more than $25,000 for the USO and $8,000 for the LAX Kiwanis Club. The tournament was chaired by LAWA's Chief of Bus Operations, Mario Lafaurie. |

North Valley Occupational Center students visit FlyHouse in Van Nuys to learn about Aviation careers. |
|
|
On June 8, nearly 100 students from the Aviation Maintenance Technician program at North Valley Occupational Center took part in an airfield tour and career day at the school’s Van Nuys Airport campus.
Students met with representatives from several airport tenants — including Clay Lacy, FlyHouse, Helinet, StandardAero and Thornton Aviation — and visited multiple facilities to learn more about day‑to‑day operations and career pathways. The tour also included a stop at the City of Los Angeles General Services Division hangar for an inside look at their maintenance work.
Of the 100 participating students, 58 graduated from the program this year, and 60 have already earned their A&P license, including last year’s graduating class of 48.

Did you know?
There’s been plenty of debate over what the “X” in LAX stands for — but the truth is, it doesn’t stand for anything at all. When aviation expanded in the 1930s, airports needed three‑letter identifiers to keep destinations clear. Los Angeles Municipal Airport simply added an “X” to its original two‑letter code, LA, becoming LAX.
That’s the same reason you see codes like LAS for Las Vegas and LAA for Lamar, Colorado. The extra letter helped standardize airport identifiers as air travel grew.

LAX Residential Sound Insulation Program
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) relaunched the LAX Residential Sound Insulation (RSI) Program for eligible homeowners located within FAA-approved noise contours near LAX.
The program provides sound-insulation improvements, including upgraded windows, exterior doors, and ventilation systems, at no cost to homeowners in the City of El Segundo and select neighborhoods within Los Angeles City Council Districts 11 and 8. Improvements vary depending on each home’s construction type and any applicable historic designation requirements.
Although the program is winding down, there is still time to apply. Applications will be accepted through Spring 2027.
Homeowners are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. An updated noise exposure map is expected to be released at the end of summer 2026. Submitting an application now helps ensure your eligibility before the contour update takes effect.
To learn more about the program, confirm eligibility, or submit an application online, please visit: www.LAWA.org/laxRSIprogram. For questions or additional information, please contact: Evelin Barajas, LAX RSI Program Homeowner Liaison, at 424-646-7444 or laxrsi@lawa.org.
